Annual Exams
A once-a-year exam is the best way to recognize changes in your body.
A once-a-year well-woman exam is the best way to recognize changes in your body, especially in your reproductive, mammary, and urological systems, as well as your bone structure. Exams are typically tailored to your needs, depending upon your medical history and current stage of life.
Here’s what you can expect your annual exam at GYN OB Associates to cover based on your age:
Age 18-39
- Take height and weight measurement
- Check blood pressure
- Perform urinalysis
- Conduct pelvic and *breast exams
- Take PAP smear
- Discuss birth control (as needed)
- Perform blood work (including cholesterol screening)
*Women at risk for breast cancer may require a baseline mammogram at age 35.
Age 40-64
- Take height and weight measurement
- Check blood pressure
- Perform urinalysis
- Examine neck and skin
- Conduct pelvic and breast exams
- Perform abdominal and rectal exams
- Take PAP smear
- Schedule mammogram
- Perform blood work (including cholesterol screening) every 3-5 years
*Women 50 and older may require a bone densitometry test
When the examination portion of your appointment is complete, your gynecologist will review your health record and answer any questions you have. This is when you should tell your gynecologist about the timing and frequency of any illness or other condition you might have experienced since your last appointment. Also make sure to include information about whether you have experienced irregular periods or painful periods, or any other menstrual problems, vaginal infections, or painful sexual intercourse. Other health issues to discuss include any dramatic weight change, hair loss, or skin changes.
